Maximising your profile

A five step guide to getting the most out of your Sutton Trust Alumni profile

One great benefit of activating your Sutton Trust Alumni account is using the ‘make connections’ feature to access careers advice from other alumni. Or if you are more established in your career, this feature allows alumni to reach out to you, so you can share advice and industry tips.

To get the most out of your alumni directory, having a stand-out profile is key. There are over 2,000 alumni on the network so knowing who the right person is to contact can be difficult. This is why we have put together a guide to ensure that you can find the advice you need, and other alumni can seek you out for support as easily as possible.

  1. Choose a great photo

Contacting someone you don’t know is hard at the best of times but being able to put a face to a name can often make the difference. Positive first impressions stick so by uploading a friendly photo, it will make it easier for an alum to reach out to you and makes it more likely that you’ll get a response to any questions you pose. If you connect your LinkedIn profile to your account your profile photo will automatically be uploaded.

  1. List your education

Where you have studied can be a great place to start a conversation. Listing the subject as well as the university will help other alumni to find and ask you for advice. This goes the same for a Masters or PhD.

  1. Industry is key

At the top of your profile you can list all the industries you have worked in. This makes it easier for alumni to filter their search and is one of the most popular starting points for advice. Any work experience can also be categorised by industry. If you have connected your LinkedIn profile to your account they will transfer over your current employment, but it's worth listing your previous experience too!

  1. Don’t waste your summary!

Your summary is a chance to tell others a little bit more about yourself. If you contact someone for advice, having a summary could help that individual give a useful response and learn a little bit more about you.

  1. Can you give back?

Finally, always check if someone has specified that they are willing to be contacted. If at any point you wish to change your status, we recommend you keep the volunteering toggles as up to date as possible, so alumni are only reaching out to individuals who can respond.
